Operation

(Note: the gestures referred to in this section are those applicable to Apple’s Voiceover screen reading utility. They are different from the normal gestures used by sighted users without Voiceover being switched on.)

The Main Screen

At the topmost of the main screen is the title bar which displays the title of this app.  At the left end of this bar is a button titled “About” which, on being double tapped, will bring up the “About” screen which I will discuss later.  At the right end of this bar is another button named “Language” which allows you to change to another language (i.e. from Chinese to English or vice versa).

Below the title bar is the Supermarket Selection bar which displayts the names of the 6 supermarket chains.  Swipe from left to right or vis versa to listen to these names being read out and double tap on any of them to select. At the right end of this bar is a button titled “Cmp” which stands for “compare prices”.

Once you have selected a supermarket, the status line below the selection bar will display the full name of this supermarket together with the text “Select product type”.  To the right of this status line is a button titled “Shopping List” which I shall discuss later.

The rest of the screen will display a list of the product types specific to the selected supermarket.  Double tapping on any item in the product type list will bring you to the next screen which lists all the products falling under the selected type.

The Product List Screen

The title Bar at the top of this screen displays the selected supermarket name and the product type. Right beneath this bar are two switches which allow you to choose to display all products under the selected type or just those products which are on special offer.  According to your choice, the products are listed in the rest of the screen.  Swipe from left to right or vice versa with one finger to go through the list item by item.

For each item in the list are displayed the brand, description and  the price of the product and whether any discount is on offer.  To add any of the items to your shopping list, swipe up or down with one finger on the desired item.  When you hear the text “Add item to list”, double tapp the screen and a dialogue box will pop up to ask you to confirm.  Double tap “OK” to add the item or “Cancel” to discontinue.  In either case, you will be returned to the product list.

To browse products under another product type, you go back to the main screen by double tapping on the “Back” button on the uppper-left corner of the screen.  Once you are back to the main screen, you may repeat the steps above to choose another product type and browse the products under it.

The Compare Prices Screen

Selecting the “Cmp” option on the Supermarket Selection Bar will invoke the “compare prices” functionality.  The App will fetch a full list of products available in all the 6 supermarket chains.  The status bar will display the message “Loading” while the product details are being gathered and the list is being built.  Once this is done, the status bar will change to “Cmp Prices: Product Types”.  Selecting an item from the type list will bring you to the compare prices screen.

Unlike the Product List Screen as discussed above, the Compare Prices Screen lists the products under the selected type in blocks, giving the brand and name of each product as  the block header with the prices charged and the discounts offered, if any, by different supermarket chains listed below it.  As with the Product List Screen, you may also add items to the shopping list by swiping up or down on each price/discount item in a product block.  Double tapping on the Back button will return you to the main screen.

The Shopping List

After adding items to the shopping list, you may view your list by pressing the “Shopping List” button to the right of the status line on the main screen.  This will bring up the Shopping List screen.  Hewre, you can review all the items you have added to the list.  For each item listed, you can see at the right edge a text box displaying the quantity you want for that item together with a “plus” (+) button and a “minus” (-) button  beneath it.  double tapping the + button increments the quantity by one and double tapping the - button decrements it by one. This saves the blind user the trouble of typing values into the text box.

At the upper right corner of this screen To the right of the title bar is a button titled “Share”.  Double tapping this button will pop up a screen which allows you to print out your list or send it to others by email, message, WatsApp and other messaging tools.  With this handy feature, you may bring your print out to the supermarket and present it to the staff there for help.  You may also dispatch your list to a friend or relative who can pick the items from the supermarket for you.  In sharing the contents of your shopping list, you would of course need to abide by the terms and conditions, including those on privacy policy,  laid down for the use of the relevant messaging apps.

To remove all the imtems from the shopping list, simply double tap the “Clear” button to the left of the “Share” button and then press “OK” to confirm in the the dialogue box that pops up.

The About Screen

While in the main screen, double tapping on the “About” button on the left of the title bar will bring up the About Screen.  Here, you are given the options of browsing this help document, browssing the End-User License Agreement and emailing your feedback to the developer.  Double tap on any of these three buttons to invoke your option.  When finished, double tap on the Back button on the upper left screen corner to return to the main screen.

Changing Language

This is a fully bilingual app for Chinese and English speaking users.  On installation, the app will start up with Chinese Traditional or English, depending on the iPhone language selected by the user in the user settings.  To switch to another language, all you need to do is to double tap the “Language” button on the upper right hand screen corner on the right edge of the title bar.  A confirmation dialogue box will popup.  Once you have confirmed by double tapping the “OK” button, the language switch is complete.  The new setting will take effect upon the next restart of the app.

Data

The backbone of this application is a data set of supermarket products and their prices built and maintained by Radica Systems Ltd.  This data set is compiled and updated on a daily basis based on information gathered from the web sites of the 6 supermarket chains involved.  While the range of products is quite wide and comprehensive, it is by no means exhaustive.  Because of possible time gaps in data updating, the product prices listed may at times be different from the actual charges shown at supermarket check-out points.  The former should therefore be taken as for reference only.

Acknowledgement

The developer would like to record here his sincerest thanks and gratitude to Radica Systems Ltd. and Data Studio at Hong Kong Science Park for providing and keeping current the data set for this application.  Their generous help and support will no doubt be of tremendous benefit to the vast visually impaired population in Hong Kong.

The Developer’s thanks also goes to:

l         Miss Hermia Tam for translating the End-user agreement into Chinese and proof-reading the Chinese version of this document;

l         Prof. Connie Ho and Mr. Tony Yum for testing the app and giving invaluable suggestions for improvements; and

l         Mr. Ryan Lam for picking a suitable icon for the App.
